I hadn’t worked with an editor before the Manuscript Breakthrough Program, and now I’m probably spoiled. I had imagined the kind of feedback I hoped to get, and my team editor, Linda, exceeded my expectations. Her thoughtful comments addressed both the art and the craft of my writing with notes ranging from character arcs to dialogue tags. She included specific suggestions to address each point. Linda also wrote about my areas of strength, which gave me something to cling to during the slog moments. I must admit, I’ve reread those paragraphs a few times. I may have even highlighted them. Most importantly, my editor gave care and respect to my story. During our phone conference, she called my characters by name, as though they were just as real to her as they are to me. In the end, she did what I imagine a very good editor is supposed to do. She showed me many ways to make my manuscript better, and she left me feeling not discouraged, but inspired.

I had just finished my first manuscript. At that point, I didn’t know what I didn't know. What do I do now? Having worked with Diane in other workshops, she felt her Manuscript Breakthrough Plan would be appropriate. Like Yoda, her direction was spot on. The Manuscript Breakthrough Plan provided me with a broad overview of POV, character development, and the arc and consistency of the story. The comments given were specific and detailed. A blueprint to improve the manuscript. The comments helped me to navigate the next steps in my development as a writer. I won’t say it was the end of my journey but I have progressed. I now see the nuggets that were given to me that have moved me forward.  To go back and rewrite is painstaking work. However, if you are a serious writer who wants to develop and gain traction in your writing, this is a great plan to consider.

This was my first time using a professional editor, and the experience was everything I’d hoped for. Friends and family had read my novel and offered vague praise and suggestions, but what I needed at this stage was expertise and impartiality. Diane and my team editor, Linda, are both amazing! I received a ten-page critique that explained in detail what worked well and what needed tweaking. Linda found inconsistencies that I hadn’t noticed after multiple re-reads and edits. She gave me solid ideas for how to make the overall story arc blend together and make better sense to the reader. I’m ready to pursue publication now, thanks to Diane and her team.
